ExpoConnect, from PT Expoconnect Teknologi Indonesia, matches buyers with exhibitors at B2B exhibitions. An exhibition hall is a hard place to run software: the connection comes and goes, and the queue at the gate does not wait. The platform is theirs, built by their own team. We work in that team as developers, on the tickets we are given.

What we do

  • Take tickets on the integration platform, alongside ExpoConnect’s own developers.
  • Hunt bugs and close tickets so the platform keeps running in semi-offline environments.
  • Look after the offline scanner mini-app the event gates use to scan a visitor in and print the badge. That part is ours to keep working.

How the scanner works offline

  1. It gets ready while there is still a connection

The attendee list and the scanner’s own screens are stored in the browser. Staff are told they can leave the WiFi only when every piece is in place, and a list more than 12 hours old is flagged as stale.

  2. It decides on the device

A scan is checked against what is already in the browser: is this one of our codes, is the person known, approved, allowed through this gate, already scanned. No network call is needed for the answer.

  3. It writes the scan down first

Every scan is saved on the device before anything is sent. A dropped connection does not lose it.

  4. It syncs when the connection returns

Scans go up in batches and the server answers for each one separately. A scan is only marked as synced once the server’s reply lists it. Sending the same batch twice is safe, so a device that never heard the reply can simply try again.

Printing the badge

The badge prints on a label printer over USB, straight from the browser: no print dialog and no helper program to install on each laptop. An earlier version went through a QZ Tray bridge. Label size, darkness and speed are set per device, because two laptops at the same desk can hold different label stock.

Where it stands

We joined in June 2026 and the offline scanner started in August. ExpoConnect ran at Indonesia Apps Summit 2026 at ICE BSD on 14 and 15 September 2026; Kevin wrote about it on LinkedIn. The work is ongoing.
